285: Cameron Wade (St Peter Chanel/Twinsburg, Ohio.) - 9th seed - 30-8 overall
1st Rd: W, 9-2 dec. Clayton Jack, Oregon State
2nd Rd: W, 4-1 dec. #8 Tony Nelson, Minnesota
Quarters: L, def. #1 Zach Rey, Lehigh
Conso Rd. 4: L, 2-4 (sv) Ricky Alcala, Indiana
Junior Cameron Wade entered his second NCAA Championship as the No. 9 seed at heavyweight. Wade turned a first period takedown into a blowout win, turning Oregon State's Clayton Jack twice and rolling to a 9-2 win with over 4:00 in riding time. Wade moved into the second round where he met No. 8 seed Tony Nelson of Minnesota.
Wade, who lost to Nelson two weeks ago in the Big Ten Championships 3-0, avenged that loss with a superb 4-1 win over the Gopher big man. Wade got a first period takedown and a second period reversal to notch the victory, Penn State's fourth over Minnesota this round.
The ninth-seeded Wade was taken down in the first period by top-seeded Zach Rey of Lehigh in his quarterfinal match-up. During a scramble late in the period, Wade suffered an injury and, while he did continue into the second period, was not able to continue early in the middle stanza and defaulted into the consolation bracket.
In the consos, Wade tried valiantly to come back from an injury in his quarterfinal match, taking Indiana's Ricky Alcala to sudden victory before losing. Alcala got a takedown midway through the extra period to get the 4-2 win and end Wade's tournament one win shy of All-America honors. Wade ends his tournament with a 2-2 record and posted a 30-8 record over the course of the season.
March 19, 2011
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lions have won the 2011 NCAA Wrestling national championship in Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center. It is the school's first title since 1953 and becoming the first east coast school to win the crown since that year. Sophomore Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) claimed the individual national crown at 184 as Penn State outdistanced Cornell and Iowa for the championship.
Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson, the 2011 Big Ten Coach of the Year, earned his first collegiate national team title as a coach or wrestler as the Nittany Lions won the team race with 107.5 points. Cornell took second place with 93.5 and Iowa was third with 86.5.
Junior Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.), now a three-time All-American, opened up Penn State's championship session in the title tilt at 149. Molinaro took on Cornell's Kyle Dake but found the footing rough against last year's national champion at 141. The Cornell grappler notched an early takedown in the first, three back points in the second and a reversal and riding time point to notch an 8-1 win. The loss means Molinaro ends the season as the 2011 National Runner-Up at 149 pounds. He is Penn State's 19th three-time All-American, having finished 8th at 141 in 2009, 6th at 149 last year and 2nd at 149 this year. Molinaro ends the campaign with a 32-3 record after going 4-1 at this year's tournament. Molinaro heads into his senior season with an 88-29 overall record.
Red-shirt freshman David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), a first time All-American for Penn State, took on Arizona State's Bubba Jenkins in the championship bout at 157. The duo wrestled evenly for the first period with Taylor taking two shots that Jenkins managed to counter and turn into stalemates. Taylor took down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. The Lion freshman then got in on a single leg that Jenkins countered once more, forcing a scramble that Jenkins used to catch Taylor in a cradle. Jenkins pinned Taylor at the 4:14 mark, ending Taylor's unbeaten season. The loss means Taylor is the 2011 National Runner-Up at 157. The freshman All-American went 4-1 at his first NCAA tournament and posted a superb 38-1 overall record, with 34 of his wins earning bonus points.
Sophomore Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.), now a two-time All-American, battled Lehigh's Robert Hamlin in the national final at 184, coming away with a convincing 5-2 win. Wright and Hamlin battled each other evenly for the first period, with neither man scoring any point in the opening three minutes. Wright chose down to start the second period and escaped quickly to a 1-0 lead. From there the floodgates opened for the Penn State sophomore. He quickly took Hamlin down for a 3-0 lead and then, after a Hamlin escape, took the Mountain Hawk down one more time. Wright rode the 5-2 lead through the third period and claimed the 2011 NCAA National title at 184. Wright ends a stunning March with a 21-6 record after a perfect 5-0 run through nationals. Now a two-time All-American, Wright will head into his sophomore year with a 54-19 record.
Penn State ends the 2011 National Championships with a superb 29-10 overall record. The Nittany Lions collected 16.5 bonus points from six pins, three majors and a tech fall. Penn State's five All-Americans up the all-time total at Penn State to 171 and is the most All-Americans for Penn State in one year since the team had five in 1998. The record is eight set in 1987. While Penn State is the first east coast team to win the championship since the Nittany Lions won it in 1953, the only other team east of the Mississippi river to win a national title since that year was Michigan State, which won the crown in 1967. Freshman All-American Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), the third place finisher at 174, won the tournament's Gorriaran Award, given to the wrestler who has the most pins in the least amount of time. Ruth had two pins in 1:06, including one in :24.

Chanel's wrestling coach has sights on state title
Vincent Dorsey

The plan was to coach together for 10 years, which they did.
In that time, the pair turned a program that had never produced a state qualifier into a four-time team state champion.
After Chanel won a state title in 1988, Govang stuck to the 10-year plan and retired, but
Coghill wasn't ready to give up coaching just yet.
"There is always another kid that I want to see go through," Coghill said of his longevity. "That's kind of kept me with it a lot of years."
Now in his 33rd year at Chanel, Coghill has coached
156 state qualifiers, 107 state placers and 25 state champions.
However, to him, winning is not as important as the relationships he develops with his wrestlers.
Coghill also cherishes the accomplishments of each Chanel wrestler, whether he is a state champion or someone just trying to break the lineup.
"You've gotta look at every kid as an individual," Coghill. "Everyone's different."
Coach spends lifetime sharing sport's life lessons
Coghill firmly holds to the idea that wrestling can instill important life lessons.
"It's a lot like life," Coghill said of the sport. "I don't care how good you are, you get knocked down. It's a great training experience for dedication and learning how to pick yourself up."
Coghill serves as an example for his wrestlers when it comes to being dedicated. For the first 11 years of his tenure at Chanel, he worked three jobs. W
hen he wasn't working the third shift as a laborer at
Towmotor Corporation
or coaching at Chanel, he was teaching takedown maneuvers at the Longwood YMCA.
"I've taken time away from my family and everything else to be a coach," Coghill said.
When juggling the three jobs got too difficult, Coghill stopped coaching at the Y.
But Coghill's respite from youth wrestling didn't last long. Knowing that a youth program is the lifeblood of any high school athletic program, he established the
Firebird Youth Program
in 1986.
"I knew I needed a feeder program to have kids come in or I wasn't going to be successful," the 1997 Ohio Division III Coach of the Year said. "It was a matter of deciding to quit coaching - which I didn't want to do at the time - or start another program."
Because of the youth program, Coghill has been coaching the majority of his current wrestlers since they first donned a singlet.
"Most of my kids, I've worked with since they were 5, 6 [or] 7 years old," he said. "They're like sons to me."
That longevity has helped Coghill create meaningful relationships with each wrestler.
"If you have to get in their face or something like that, they know what to expect," he said.
Coghill leaves imprint on wrestlers, room
As if imprinting life lessons on his wrestlers were not enough, Coghill has left his mark on the wrestling room at Chanel.
The veteran coach joined other program supporters in constructing the team's current room, doing most of the welding work.
"We mixed mud, carried blocks, so it was quite an accomplishment," Coghill said, reflecting back.
Completed in 2007, the room was built with donated funds and labor and is now named in honor of Coghill.
Firebirds enter state tourney seeking fifth team title
Chanel began this season as
one of the favorites
to take home the team state championship in Division III.
The
Firebirds
have proven worthy of the preseason buzz by completing a near-flawless season. The only blip on the team's resume is its runner-up finish to Division I Cincinnati Moeller at this year's
Catholic Invitational Tournament
.
After placing first at last weekend's
Garfield Heights District Tournament
and qualifying
seven wrestlers
to this week's state meet, Chanel enters competition Thursday with aspirations of collecting its fifth team championship.
The Firebirds had similar hopes last season, but they were crippled before competition began when
Cody Walters
was ruled ineligible by tournament doctors due to a skin infection.
"It knocked the team down," Coghill said of the ruling. "We just weren't able to recover from it."
The Firebirds finished third at
last year's state tournament
.
This year's team is ranked first in the final Division III
Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association State Poll of this season,
and is led by Walters and fellow senior
.
It should come as no surprise that Coghill's teams often take on a family dynamic, and the patriarch of the Firebirds wrestling program said this year's team is even closer than those he's had in recent memory.
Like any proud father, Coghill hopes to have the opportunity to watch his "wrestling sons" be crowned state champions Saturday night.

BEDFORD, Ohio — Sectional wrestling begins in a week, so really, only one question matters this week.
Are you ready?
"If we're not, it's too late," St. Peter Chanel coach Graham Coghill said with a trace of a smile after his Firebirds beat Walsh Jesuit, 36-27, on Friday.
The dual meet at Chanel was a final tuneup for both state contenders. No. 1-ranked Chanel (14-0) is the team to beat in Division III. No team is expected to challenge St. Paris Graham in Division II, but No. 3 Walsh has enough firepower to claim the runner-up trophy.
"We want to take state and win it," Chanel senior Tyler Porter said. "I like how close we are with each other."
Both teams are banged up and the meet itself was a bit of a letdown because some of the better wrestlers didn't compete or were nursing injuries. Chanel won six of the nine matches that were wrestled.
"We're close to where we should be. We've got to get a couple guys healthy this week," Walsh interim coach Fred Daugherty said.
An anticipated showdown at 103 pounds didn't occur because Walsh Jesuit stellar freshman Anthony Tutolo has a "health issue" that Daugherty said should be resolved this week. So, Chanel's Aaron Assad, who placed third at state last year, went without a match.
Chanel-140 pounder Dan Collier, a three-time state qualifier, is still bothered by a shoulder injury that has hampered him all year. He defaulted in the third period while losing, 2-1, to Roman Bell.
Walsh's Nick Rumple is coming off an injury, and he hasn't dropped down to 160 pounds, so he wrestled at 171 and lost to Porter, 7-1. That left Chanel's Cody Walters, an Ohio University recruit, without a match at 160.
Walsh's Cory Stainbrook (112) and Johnni DiJulius (130), an Ohio State recruit, also won by forfeit.
The highlight match was Chanel 189-pounder Jonathon Schafer's 7-6 win against Anthony Melchiorre. Schafer trailed most of the match and got the winning takedown with 23 seconds left as both wrestlers dived out of bounds.
Walsh's John Novak put up a good fight against Chanel standout Danny Orrill, who won at 145 pounds, 2-1, on an escape in overtime. Chanel's Mike DeCesare (125), Joe Kiefer (152) and Dan Barrett (heavyweight) also won decisions.
Walsh's Michael Kostandaras (119) and Nate Skonieczny (135) won major decisions.
Perhaps with an eye on the weeks to come, both teams looked flat at times.
"We didn't wrestle well tonight. I think the guys are looking forward to the sectionals," Coghill said.

St. Edward, Chanel take crowns at state dual meet wrestling
Tim Warsinskey, Plain Dealer Reporter
,
January 10, 2011 10:07 a.m.
Despite the seedings and state rankings,
St. Peter Chanel
coach Graham Coghill says his wrestling team is not the favorite at the Division III state dual meet tournament Sunday at
Metamora Evergreen
.
Coghill deflects that honor and places the target on No. 2 seed
West Jefferson
, last year's runner-up.
"I expect West Jefferson to be the team to beat," Coghill said. "They're the team. They have a solid team. We hopefully will be at full strength."
Chanel is the No. 1 seed and ranked No. 1 in the state coaches poll. The Firebirds are coming off an impressive team triumph at the
Brecksville
Holiday Tournament, where they beat shorthanded
Wadsworth
.
Coghill said state qualifiers Cody Tschantz and Danny Collier are expected back in the lineup. Tschantz had been out with a concussion and Collier didn't wrestle for an undisclosed reason. They are among eight returning state qualifiers, including 2009 or 2010 place-winners Michael Kovach, Aaron Assad, Dan Orrill, Jeremy Walden and Cody Walters, who is an Ohio University recruit.
Chanel opens against
New Lexington Dixie
. Chanel's likely semifinal opponent is star-studded
Monroeville
, which features an unprecedented trio of three-time state champions in Hunter Stieber, Cam Tessari and Chris Phillips.
In a dual-meet setting, Chanel has more depth than Monroeville. Their anticipated showdown at the state tournament in March will be a little more complicated.
"We think we're happy with where we're at right now," Coghill said.

WADSWORTH, Ohio -- St. Edward has won so many state wrestling championships, one has to wonder what it does with all that hardware.
A year following a rare season in which the Eagles won neither the state dual meet tournament nor the state championships in March, it's clear they are back on a title track.
St. Edward won its 12th Division I state dual meet championship Sunday with relative ease. The Eagles defeated Massillon Perry, 34-16, in the championship of the eight-team, three-round tournament at Wadsworth High School. They also beat Mayfield (54-18) and Cincinnati Elder (50-10).
In Division III, Chanel won the state title with a 39-27 finals triumph against West Jefferson at Metamora Evergreen High School.
Division II
: No. 7 seed Crestwood upset No. 2 Oak Harbor in the first round, 35-34, while No. 4 Walsh opened with a 38-30 win over Wauseon. Both local teams lost in the semifinals, Crestwood to Olentangy, 33-29, and Walsh to St. Paris Graham, 45-25.
Division III:
Pins in the final two matches by Dan Orrill (145) and Joe Kiefer (160) broke a 27-27 tie and clinched the championship for No. 1-seeded Chanel. Jonathan Schafer (189) also had a pin as Chanel jumped to an 18-0 lead. The Firebirds beat New Lebanon Dixie, 38-21, in the first round and Nelsonville York, 48-24, in the semifinals.

Cameron Wade wins 2010 Southern Shuffle
GREENSBORO, N.C. -
The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team continued its outstanding early season run, claiming the Co-Championships of the 2010 Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. Penn State, ranked No. 4, tied No. 1 Cornell for the team crown. The Nittany Lions sent four wrestlers to the finals in front of a rowdy crowd at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex and crowned three champions.
Red-shirt freshmen
David Taylor
(St. Paris, Ohio) and
Ed Ruth
(Harrisburg, Pa.) won titles at 157 and 174 while junior
Cameron Wade
(Twinsburg, Ohio) forged the tie with a title winning decision in the tournament's final bout at heavyweight. Ruth's sizzling title-run at 174 earned him the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. Two-time All-American
Frank Molinaro
(Barnegat, N.J.) almost made it four for four in the finals for Penn State with a one-point loss to the nation's top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 149. The Nittany Lions sent 15 wrestlers into action at the two-day event and eight placed.
Junior heavyweight
Cameron Wade
(Twinsburg, Ohio), ranked No. 6 nationally, continued to roll and beat No. 12 Clayton Jack 7-4 in the semifinals, setting up a finals bout against No. 7 Ben Apland of Michigan. Wade needed a win to force a tie in the team race and he gave the packed house all they could handle. Down 2-1 with time running out, Wade turned Apland for two back points as the Lion faithful roared and, with a riding time point, notched a 4-2 thriller to take the title at heavyweight. The win allowed Penn State to forge a tie in the team race as well. Wade went 6-0 with three pins to win the title and now has a 16-2 overall record.
